ACT schools are invited to enter:

THE NAMING AUSTRALIA COMPETITION

A celebration of the Spanish contribution to the history and naming of Australia

•  Have you ever wondered who were the first non-indigenous Australians to name and map Australia?

•  Do you know how many years ago this took place?

•  The Naming Australia competition gives you the chance to discover more about Australia’s history and

win a trip for two to Spain!

This competition celebrates 400 years 1606-2006 of the naming of Australia.

May 14, 2006 will be the 400th anniversary of the occasion of Captain Pedro Fernandez de Quiros, discovering what he believed to be the great south land, claiming it for Spain and naming it Austrialia del Espiritu Santo.

In 2006 we will celebrate the fourth centenary of the voyages of Quirós and Torres in 1605-1606, and specifically, three events that took place:

•  the naming of Australia

•  the first sighting of Australia by Spanish sailors, and

•  the first European navigation through the Straits that bear the name of Torres.

The theme “Naming Australia” is intended to be broad allowing for creativity and diversity amongst entries. Focus areas may include the naming of Australia by Pedro Fernandez De Quirós’ first sighting of Australia by Spanish sailors and others; or the first European navigation through the Straits that bear the name of Torres.

This is a multi-media format entry (audio/video/website)

Students are encouraged to be creative in their response to the theme.

Judges will assess entries based on the criteria (attached) and on relevance to the theme.

Schools are asked to shortlist and submit up to five individual student entries per category.
