Celebratory Dinner

18 October 2006

On the evening of 18 October 2006, a Celebratory Dinner was held at The Commonwealth Club, in Canberra, to celebrate the contribution by the Spanish to the history and naming of Australia.

14 May 2006 was the 400th anniversary of the occasion when Captain Pedro Fernandez de Quiros, having discovered what he believed to be the great south land, claimed it for Spain and named it "Austrialia del Espiritu Santo".

In particular, we celebrated the involvement of Captain Pedro Fernandez de Quiros and Fernandez de Quirós.

Attending the Celebratory Dinner were the Spanish community; Spanish dignitaries; the Ambassador of Spain, His Excellency Mr Antonio Cosano and Mrs Cosano; the President of the Australia-Spain Parliamentary Group from the Australian Parliament, Mr David Fawcett MP; Senators and MP who are members of the Australia-Spain Parliamentary Group; the diplomatic corps from Canberra; political and business leaders; senior government officials; the President of the Spanish-Australian Club of Canberra; the President of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Australia; many people who are interested in Spain; and  many people interested in building business links with Spain.

During the evening, presentations of awards  were made to the school competition finalists.
